In 1987, Tim attended the International Llama
Association (ILA) Meeting in Portland, Oregon.
At that time, there were less than thirty farms
raising alpacas. A number of the alpaca owners
present at the Oregon meeting decided to form
an independent alpaca organization, separate from
the ILA. Tim was chosen to lead the group in developing
the infrastructure of the new organization. A
very busy year followed with our efforts culminating
in the first ever independent meeting of alpaca
owners and breeders held at Shanty Creek Resort
in Bellaire, Michigan in 1988. The purpose, bylaws
and articles of incorporation were presented to
the group; the first official elections were held,
and the Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association
(AOBA) was born. On this small group, the entire
alpaca industry was founded. It has been truly
amazing to watch the development and maturation
of the industry.
